The Skies Opened Up!

From my office on the second floor of The Business Center I just saw one of our long term clients cross the road. The weather is rather threatening and the sight of him brought back a recent memory of both dismay and joy. This particular client loves to listen to the radio and he can recite all the AM/FM stations that can be heard in Olympia. He knows the show’s formats, the DJ’s or radio personalities and he will ask you what radio station you listen to…knowing that you have told him more than once that you listen to various stations. If you say 88.1 he will know that it is Air 1; 88.5, KPLU and so on…and ask if you had listened to Kirsten Kendrick, or Erik and Heather today and then ask if you have listened to ROXY 94.5 lately. He is a delight and we have assisted in helping him go on air for a brief time as a DJ – one of his life’s greatest desire. His favorite activity at our picnic is to sing karaoke. I have countless pictures of him singing into the microphone over the past several years….but not this year. Stormzilla hit Rainier Vista Park this year (see picture) and the best we could muster was to sit under cover and eat and enjoy each person’s company. All planned activities got scratched….especially the karaoke machine with several millimeters of water spilling on the ground. It definitely wasn’t safe. It was a nightmare. Everything planned (except the food) was canceled and the softball field looked like Capitol Lake.

When the torrential downpour hit, the park was covered in water and the sight of everyone scrambling from the parking lot to the shelter, trying to crowd into an already packed space was disheartening to say the least, everyone got soaked.

So what was joyful about the experience? Well it was how everyone pulled together to make the best of a dismal situation. I noticed more conversation, friends having fun getting caught up, people pitching in to help comfort others (there was an unbelievable amount of thunder and lightning), or offer an umbrella to share getting from one picnic shelter to another. There was an amazing team effort to make the situation the absolute best it could be. It was my pleasure to witness this unorchestrated group of people acting in concert and precision to pull off feeding a few hundred people, entertain them, and pack everything up as if it was planned and practiced to perfection. My hat is off to the Morningside tribe – you all rock!
